Hi, My name is Michella Walker and I am a sophomore at Farmingdale State College, majoring in Architectural Design.
Project 3: Light
Architectural Design II - ARC 257
The goal of this project is to design a non-denominational chapel at Farmingdale State College. Farmingdale State wants it to be a peaceful space where people of all faiths can worship and reflect. They believe that the use of light can help achieve this. The design will control how light comes to create a functional space, perfect for worship and reflection.
Light Background Research
Louis I. Kahn - Kimbell Art Musuem

Kahn, is celebrated for its harmonious blend of modernist design and natural light, with its iconic cycloid vaults creating a serene, light-filled environment that enhances the viewing of art. Light becomes art itself—filtered through skylights and reflected off curved vaults, it bathes the space in a gentle, glowing rhythm that brings each artwork quietly to life.
The softly curved concrete vaults and polished aluminum reflectors work together to guide natural light from the skylights, bouncing it across the pale travertine walls to create a diffuse, even illumination that enhances the serenity and clarity of the space.

Curved ceiling creates a sense of movement, and this allow light to flow across the space and change throughout the day depending on how the light bounces of the wall.

The following designs are preliminary designs mapping out the requested spaces as mass and paths of circulation. After observing the design and circulation of these designs I choose design 6 as i believe it had the most potential.
